This week, scholars began reading Stanford University Commencement Speech: Steve Jobs. This is a speech that was given by the late CEO and Founder of Apple, Inc. at Stanford University in 2005. Scholars are reading this text closely, which means that they are reading and re-reading it paragraph by paragraph, finding the gist, determining the meaning of unknown words, and holding small-group discussions. Since the speech was recorded, they are also watching and listening to it while following along silently.
This weekend, scholars are to re-read paragraphs 7 and 8 of the speech. Then, they are to find the gist of each paragraph. Scholars should know at this point that the formula for gist is:
WHO + WHAT = GIST
They are then to record the who, what, and gist for each paragraph on their Gist / Vocabulary Graphic Organizer that was distributed to each scholar today.
If your scholar misplaced his or her copy of Steve Jobs' speech, it is available here.
If your scholar misplaced his or her copy of the Gist / Vocabulary Graphic Organizer, it is available here.
**Scholars are only to complete the GIST portion for paragraphs 7 and 8. They are to leave the Vocabulary side of the graphic organizer blank, as this will be covered next week**
